Colorado State Government Grants ThinkOrbital $250,000 to Revolutionize In-Space Welding Technology

NEWS | MAY 24, 2023

ThinkOrbital, a leading US-based space construction and infrastructure company, announced today that it has been awarded an additional $250,000 grant from the Colorado State government. Awarded as part of Colorado State’s Advanced Industries Accelerator Program, the recent award will accelerate ThinkOrbital’s groundbreaking efforts aimed at in-space welding, debris-free cutting, multi-phenomenology sensing and additive manufacturing tools that will be used to build large, scalable infrastructure platforms in space; up to 4-times the volume of the International Space Station on a single launch.

“We are thrilled to receive this government grant, which will significantly propel our mission to deliver large, scalable, and cost-efficient space platforms,” said Sebastian Asprella, Co-founder and CEO of ThinkOrbital. “With the support of the Colorado State government, we can further advance our in-space welding and assembly capabilities, paving the way for future lunar and Mars missions. This funding reaffirms the enthusiasm and recognition we have received from industry partners and the state of Colorado who share our vision for advancing critical US space technologies, such as our in-space construction and manufacturing system.”

The ThinkOrbital team is composed of exceptional talent, and their recent addition of Frank Tybor as Chief Technology Officer further strengthens their position. Frank, a former Principal Engineer at SpaceX, brings a wealth of experience in space technology development and will play a pivotal role in directing ThinkOrbital’s in-space electron beam technology, the ThinkWeld, ThinkInspect, and ThinkPrint toolkit.

ThinkOrbital’s ThinkPlatform is a groundbreaking multi-mission space platform that offers vast opportunities for various private and public sector needs, including satellite servicing, space debris remediation, in-space manufacturing, research missions, on-orbit storage and refueling, and even space tourism.
